One of the basic requirements treasured in a linguist is being fluent in one or more languages besides their own. The more languages a person knows, the better their grasp of grammar. Being able to compare two languages makes the structure of any one language clearer.
Another highly valued point is having a degree in translation, literature or a related field. It is important that the translator know how to write clearly, concisely and correctly. Most of the time, further training in proofreading is required. Many on-line courses are offered by e-learning platforms such as Udemy and Coursera, and they are often free or very affordable. It is very important for any kind of job to keep perfecting and polishing our knowledge and skills in order to produce quality work.
Good work ethic may not come naturally to everyone and is not often taught in schools, but it is an important part of the job. Meeting tight deadlines is probably the biggest challenge translators face every day, so responsible and commitment translators are a must.
